For over four decades, Gary has focused on legal research and writing. Prior to joining Carpenter & Zuckerman, Gary played a key role in the aftermath of the sensational Doris Day litigation.  Gary wrote much of the briefing on behalf of Ms. Day’s former attorney/business advisor who successfully sued his insurance carriers for bad faith and his legal counsel for malpractice.  

During his career, Gary has successfully brought and opposed in excess of 200 motions for summary judgment in cases involving personal injury, employment discrimination and general business matters.  

Gary’s practice has also involved appellate work in state and federal courts. His work there has included: 

  • Fernandez v. Jimenez (2019) 40 Cal.App.5th 482 – affirming a total of $45 million in non-economic damages for four heirs in a wrongful death action. 
  • Mahdavi-Pour v. City of Los Angeles (July 1, 2019, B284003) – affirming a $416,400 net judgment against the City of Los Angeles for a trip and fall. 
  • Costa v. County of Ventura (9th Cir. 2017) 680 F.App’x 545 – reversing the grant of summary judgment in a civil rights action against the police for the shooting and killing of a homeless man.  
  • Luna v. Monterey Park Petroleum, Inc. (Mar. 26, 2019, H042290) – reversing the grant of summary judgment in a slip and fall action against a gas station.
