Even prior to his role in government, Marty Block has played an active role in supporting and bettering the San Diego community and has lived in the San Diego area for 30 years.

Marty has a lengthy history in education as:

  • History teacher in Illinois School District 68 from 1972 – 1978;
  • Director of Student Legal Services at Western Illinois University from 1978 – 1979;
  • Member of the San Diego County Board of Education in 1986 and 1990;
  • Member of the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees in 2000, 2004, and 2008; and
  • Part of San Diego State University for 26 years as professor, dean, and director.

Additionally, Marty Block has taken part in community service in a wide variety of roles including Commissioner of the San Diego County Commission on Children, Youth and Families; past member of the San Diego County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force; past member of San Diego Children’s Initiative; and the host of more than 50 Public Affairs television programs on San Diego’s Learning Channel.

But Block’s prolific history does not end with education and community service. In 2008, he was elected to represent the 78th Assembly District (covering San Diego) and was appointed to the Assembly Leadership as the Assistant Majority Whip and the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Higher Education. With a focus on educational rights and improvement, Marty Block has the experience and focus to improve San Diego and California education.
